The North Carolina Tar Heels finally ended their coaching search on Monday as Mike Malone will be the next coach for the program, per multiple reports. After a near three-week search, the Tar Heels finally have their guy.
It was a bit of a surprising move for most after the Tar Heels were turned down by several candidates, including Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, Ben McCollum and more. Malone is an option that feels like a safe bet, but does lack college basketball experience.

He's proven to be a winner at the NBA level, winning a title with the Denver Nuggets a few years back. In terms of X's and O's, he's a smart guy. And following the hire, one former Tar Heel was ecstatic that they landed him as the head coach.
"This is a great hire. We are goingto be back on the map, immediately," Tyler Hansbrough said on the Field of 68 Monday. "This is, in my opinion, an absolutely amazing hire."
Hansbrough points to there being no buyout with Malone, a big factor in terms of where the Tar Heels can put their money. He also went on to praise Malone in terms of X's and O's and the fit in terms of what the program needs.
“This is not your typical NBA hire," Hasnsbrough said. "This is a head coach who is hungry, and I think he’s going to do everything he can to get UNC back, and I think we’ll be back much faster than what people believe.”
While we've seen some struggles from NBA coaches going to the college level, Malone has to be focused. He has to be ready to work and turn this thing around right away. Time will tell if it's the right hire.
