Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, whose real name is Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, is raising funds to fight a $27m (R460m) lawsuit brought on by The Lion King composer Lebo M.

Akbar Gbajabiamila and comedian Godfrey, both Nigerian-American, hosted Mwanyenyeka on their One54 Africa Podcast, where they spoke about the lyrics at the beginning of the movie’s theme song, Circle of Life, among other topics.

Mwanyenyeka said the translation for “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba” amounted to “Look, there is a lion. Oh my God,” which, according to Lebo M, is a damaging misrepresentation.

Lebo M says he tried to engage Mwanyenyeka privately to talk about the comedian insulting his work as a composer and insulting his culture through his translation.

Because Mwanyenyeka did not respond favourably to his attempt to resolve the issue in another manner, Lebo M felt he had to take the legal route.

The comedian has since started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for legal fees to fight the lawsuit.

He titled the page Help Learnmore Fight an Unjust Lawsuit. It has so far raised $18,976 (R324,869)of the $20,000 (R342,400) he is aiming for.
