Responded immediately

Rescue swimmers responded immediately, while the NSRI Wilderness team dispatched equipment from the Herolds Bay satellite rescue base.

ER24 and WC Government Health EMS also responded.

Before emergency crews arrived, a surfer from Cape Town, on vacation with his wife, spotted the man struggling.

He launched into the surf on his board, reached the unconscious pilot, and used the surfboard to keep him afloat while paddling toward the beach.

Additional bystanders from Harlem in the Western Cape, entered the water to help carry the man ashore, where fellow pilots and local residents assisted.

Transported to hospital

NSRI medics, joined by ER24 and EMS paramedics, stabilised the man before he was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

He is now recovering under medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.

NSRI commended the Cape Town surfer, assisting bystanders, and the Herolds Bay community for their life-saving efforts, highlighting the importance of teamwork and swift action during water emergencies.
