The reports earlier Tuesday night indicated this would be the Tampa Bay Lightning's deal to lose.

In the end, it's the Vegas Golden Knights who pulled off the trade with the Nashville Predators for Cole Smith.

TSN's Darren Dreger reports that Vegas is sending a 2028 third-round pick to Nashville for the gritty forward Smith.

Smith has a cap hit of just $1 million and is on an expiring contract, so he fits as a simple rental for the Golden Knights.

The Lightning will have to look elsewhere.

Is Cole Smith good?

Smith is mostly a gritty, physical forward without a ton of scoring ability.

The 30-year old, 6-foot-3, gritty forward was an undrafted player out of the University of North Dakota when he entered the NHL

He has played all six of his seasons with Nashville, really having to work his way to relevance. In his first campaign, Smith got just one game, and in his second, it was eight.

But he's played 69, 80, 71 and now 41 games for the Predators over the last four seasons.

Overall, in 270 games with Nashville, Smith has 23 goals and 39 assists (62 points) with 223 penalty minutes. He has also blocked 99 shots and dished out an impressive 736 hits despite playing just 13 minutes and 22 seconds of average ice time per game.

Smith knows his role, and now he'll get to know it in Vegas.
